Damascus VG-10 steel - Knifever
The VG-10 Damascus steel knife is one of the knives defined by the material and structure of the blade.
67 layers of Damascus blade
The VG-10 steel core is sandwiched between the Damascus steel on both sides.
The cutting edge of VG10 steel is very hard (HRC: 62) and very sharp.
Damascus blades are made by superimposing different steel layers. Not easy to bend and break.
Composition of VG-10 steel
- 1.05 % of Carbon: It improves hardness and wear/corrosion resistance, but a high amount of it decreases strength.
- 15.5 % of Chromium: For tensile strength and Edge retention and enhances corrosion resistance and wear resistance.
- 0.5 % of Manganese: Increases hardness and brittleness.
- 0.03% of Phosphorus: Increases strength.
- 1.2% of Molybdenum: Increase Machinability and strength.
- 0.3% of Vanadium: Improves wear resistance and hardenability.
- 1.5% Cobalt: boosts the individual effects of other components
High-End steel is a balanced combination of materials, in this case, the VG 10 steel is high in carbon and chromium, which makes it stainless steel with excellent corrosion resistance and with high hardness, and the presence of the cobalt amplifies the effect of all the materials in the steel.
The best choice is VG-10 Damascus steel
Is there no better tool than VG-10?
There are also stainless steels that are harder than VG10, such as powdered high-speed steel. However, hard does not mean strong. If the stickiness (flexibility) is lacking, the hard blade will break. The most important thing is the balance of hardness and viscosity (flexibility). Moreover, this kind of steel is very expensive, which increases the price of the product exponentially.
Broken Blade
Finally, we believe that vg-10 Damascus is the best stainless steel for kitchen knives.
